The Congress party recently passed a resolution titled “Flag Bearer of Freedom Movement – Our ‘Sardar’ – Vallabhbhai Patel” during its Working Committee meeting in Ahmedabad. This resolution aims to reclaim the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, also known as the “Iron Man of India,” and emphasize his contributions to India’s freedom struggle and nation-building efforts.

The resolution highlights Patel’s role in uniting the country and his commitment to justice, equality, and non-violence. It draws inspiration from Patel’s leadership and principles to address contemporary challenges, such as religious polarization and economic inequality. The Congress accused the BJP and RSS of distorting Patel’s legacy and spreading misinformation about his relationship with Jawaharlal Nehru. The resolution also recalls Patel’s decision to ban the RSS in 1948 following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination.

Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, reaffirmed their commitment to following Patel’s ideals and addressing issues like wealth concentration and social justice. The meeting, held at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial, also marked the 150th birth anniversary of Patel, making it a significant moment for the party.

This move is seen as an effort by the Congress to counter the BJP’s attempts to appropriate Patel’s legacy and to reinforce its own historical connection to the leader.
