The Congress party has accused the BJP government of following a pattern of opposing, defaming, and later adopting policies under public pressure. Congress leaders claim that the caste census, which the BJP previously dismissed, is now being reconsidered due to mounting pressure from opposition leaders and social activists.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh criticized the Modi government, stating that it initially tried to suppress the caste census for years but has now succumbed to the unwavering fight of opposition leaders, social workers, and organizations. He called it an important milestone in the fight for social justice.

Ramesh also pointed out that the BJP has followed a similar pattern with other policies, including MGNREGA, Aadhaar, and GST. He recalled how Prime Minister Narendra Modi once called MGNREGA a “monument of failure”, only for the government to later increase its budget and take credit for its success when the scheme proved essential during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Congress leader further alleged that the BJP initially opposed Aadhaar, calling it a threat to privacy, but later made it the foundation of the welfare system. Similarly, he claimed that the BJP mocked GST before eventually implementing it.

Congress leaders argue that the BJP’s reversal on the caste census is yet another example of its habit of rejecting progressive policies, only to adopt them later when faced with public demand.
