New Delhi, July 17, 2025 — The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a sharp counterattack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, accusing him of hypocrisy and political theatrics following his recent comments targeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over alleged corruption.

Addressing reporters, BJP national spokesperson Syed Zafar Islam said Gandhi’s remarks were akin to “a thief donning the role of a watchman,” referencing Gandhi’s statement that Congress workers would send Sarma to jail if the party wins the upcoming Assam assembly elections.

Islam further alleged that Gandhi, who is currently out on bail in the National Herald case, was attempting to deflect attention from the Congress party’s repeated electoral setbacks. “He considers himself a king, but people have rejected him three times, trashing his model based on corruption and anarchy,” Islam stated.

The BJP defended Sarma’s governance, calling it a model endorsed by the people of Assam, and dismissed Gandhi’s accusations as baseless and politically motivated. Islam also criticized other INDIA bloc leaders, including RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, for allegedly trying to destabilize democratic institutions by questioning the Election Commission’s voter roll revision in Bihar.

In contrast, the BJP spokesperson praised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s recent announcement of free electricity up to 125 units for domestic consumers, calling it an example of responsive governance.

The exchange marks a fresh escalation in political rhetoric ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, with both parties sharpening their narratives around corruption and governance.
