A political clash erupted as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly criticized Congress leader Jairam Ramesh for his remarks on the NITI Aayog’s 10th Governing Council meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Ramesh, who serves as the Congress general secretary in charge of communications, labeled the NITI Aayog an “Ayogya” (unfit) body, alleging that its meeting was merely an exercise in hypocrisy and diversion. His comments sparked sharp reactions from BJP leaders, who accused him of habitually stirring controversies that harm his own party.
BJP national spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain defended the NITI Aayog’s role, describing it as a crucial institution for national policy-making. He emphasized that the meeting was a “Team India” gathering, where chief ministers and policymakers convened to discuss strategies for India’s development by 2047. Hussain further criticized Ramesh, stating that his constant objections to government initiatives would ultimately weaken the Congress.
The controversy unfolded as the NITI Aayog’s meeting focused on the theme ‘Viksit Rajya for Viksit Bharat@2047’, aiming to craft long-term development strategies. Ramesh, however, raised six pointed questions about the government’s vision, questioning its commitment to social harmony, economic equality, and institutional integrity.
The BJP also took a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, criticizing his delayed visit to Jammu and Kashmir following recent cross-border shelling incidents. Hussain remarked that Gandhi’s political engagements in Bihar and Kashmir were merely attempts to gain public sympathy.
