Roblox Corporation, the popular gaming platform, announced on Tuesday a new age-based verification system aimed at improving child safety. The system will restrict users to chat only with others in the same or similar age groups. Age verification can be completed through the platform’s ‘Facial Age Estimation technology’ or via ID checks.
The move comes after Louisiana filed a lawsuit in August 2025, alleging Roblox failed to adequately protect children from adult predators. Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, said the new system, which requires facial age checks for chat access, will create a safer, age-appropriate environment for all users. He also encouraged the broader gaming industry to adopt similar safety measures.
The feature will roll out in early December in select markets, including Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, and will expand globally in January. Age groups are categorized as under nine, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+. Chat for users under nine will default to off unless parents give consent, while users under 13 will have chat and personal data, such as email and phone number, restricted.
