Veteran actor and filmmaker Anupam Kher has publicly endorsed Shah Rukh Khan’s self-proclaimed title as the “last superstar,” stating, “I think he was right.” The comment was made during a promotional interview for Kher’s newly released directorial venture Tanvi The Great, which opened in theatres worldwide on July 18, 2025.
In a candid conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Kher reminisced about the camaraderie and authenticity that once defined the Hindi film industry. He reflected on an earlier episode of his talk show where Shah Rukh Khan had declared, “I am the last superstar.” Kher affirmed the sentiment, noting the changing dynamics of stardom in the digital age and the enduring legacy of Bollywood’s iconic figures.
“Our relationships were built genuinely. We didn’t have vanity vans or mobile phones. What we had were real bonds,” Kher said, contrasting the present-day industry with its earlier ethos. He went on to praise the timeless appeal of actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, and Shah Rukh Khan, describing their stardom as “unmatched and enduring.”
Tanvi The Great, produced by Anupam Kher Studios in association with NFDC, features a diverse ensemble cast including Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, Boman Irani, Pallavi Joshi, Karan Tacker, Nasser, and Game of Thrones actor Iain Glen. The film also showcases the creative contributions of Oscar-winning composer M.M. Keeravani and sound designer Resul Pookutty, with cinematography by Keiko Nakahara.
The film tells the story of Tanvi Raina, a 21-year-old autistic woman determined to fulfill her late father’s dream of hoisting the Indian flag at Siachen. It marks Kher’s return to direction after more than two decades and has garnered attention for its emotional depth and social relevance.
