New Delhi, July 19, 2025 — Former Australian captain Greg Chappell has weighed in on India’s ongoing Test series against England, asserting that Shubman Gill’s real test as captain begins now, with India trailing 1–2 in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
India suffered a narrow 22-run defeat in the third Test at Lord’s, placing added pressure on the young skipper ahead of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester, starting July 23. Gill, 25, has impressed with the bat—scoring centuries in the first two Tests—but Chappell emphasized that leadership demands more than individual brilliance.
In a column for ESPNcricinfo, Chappell wrote, “Gill must define what sort of team he wants India to be. The captain sets the tone—not just with words, but with actions, clarity of purpose, and visible standards.” He urged Gill to demand discipline in the field and improve communication across the squad.
Chappell highlighted several key areas for Gill’s growth:
- Fielding standards: India must avoid lapses that cost runs and opportunities.
- Selection consistency: Gill and selectors should identify a trusted core group and stick with them.
- Clear role definition: Every player must understand their responsibilities within the team strategy.
- Communication: Gill must evolve into a calm, clear communicator to align and inspire the team.
He also stressed the importance of batting partnerships and pressure-building bowling spells, noting that collapses often stem from set batters losing focus and bowlers chasing wickets without strategic discipline.
Chappell concluded, “If Gill wants to become a great Test captain, this is his moment to stamp his authority. Not just with the bat, but with his leadership. Set the standard. Demand it of others. Pick your team. Back them. And make sure every man knows what is expected and hold them to it.”
With two Tests remaining, Gill’s ability to rally his side could not only shape the outcome of the series but also define his legacy as a long-term leader of Indian cricket.
