Port Blair, July 5, 2025 — In a strategic move to enhance freshwater aquaculture and support local livelihoods, the Department of Fisheries, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, has launched a comprehensive fish seed distribution drive across the islands. The initiative aims to increase inland fish production and promote sustainable aquaculture practices among small-scale fish farmers.
Under the program, the department is supplying high-quality fingerlings of Catla, Rohu, Mrigal, Grass Carp, and Silver Carp at nominal rates. So far this year, over 10.84 lakh locally produced fish seeds have been distributed to 1,386 fish farmers, while an additional 50,240 seeds of Grass and Silver Carp procured from the mainland have reached 401 beneficiaries.
The drive is part of a broader effort to utilize the islands’ freshwater resources more effectively. Financial assistance is also being extended to eligible farmers, including:
- 25% subsidy (up to ₹9,000) for nursery pond construction
- ₹5,000–₹7,500 per pond for renovation, depending on beneficiary category
- ₹9,000 subsidy for freshwater fish harvesting nets
Officials emphasized that the initiative not only supports food security and income generation but also encourages the adoption of scientific fish farming techniques. The department continues to monitor pond productivity and provide technical guidance to ensure long-term sustainability.
Freshwater fish produced under this scheme are primarily consumed locally, with surplus stock sold in rural markets and at the Junglighat market every Sunday.
This initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to empowering island communities through targeted aquaculture development and resource optimization.
