Air India Express has launched daily direct flights from Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair) to Bengaluru and Kolkata, marking a major boost to connectivity for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The inaugural flights took off on Sunday, enhancing access to the region, a prominent tourist destination, and strengthening the airline’s expanding domestic network.
The first flight to Kolkata departed at 8:35 am, followed by the Bengaluru service at 1:50 pm. Celebrations at Sri Vijaya Puram Airport featured decorated check-in counters, sweet distributions, and ceremonial presentations for passengers. Similar festivities were held at Bengaluru and Kolkata airports to commemorate the new routes.
Port Blair anticipates significant economic benefits from these developments. Increased tourist footfall and seamless connections to key metropolitan hubs are expected to boost local businesses, particularly in hospitality, retail, and trade sectors. Stakeholders believe this enhanced connectivity will position the region as a competitive player in India’s domestic tourism and commerce landscape. Air India Express currently operates 21 weekly flights from Port Blair, connecting it to major domestic markets. Starting January 1, 2025, flights to Chennai will be introduced, with Kolkata services increasing to twice daily from December 15, 2024. The airline, with its fleet of 90 aircraft, operates over 400 daily flights, underscoring its commitment to expanding India’s aviation network and fostering regional growth.
