Aamir Khan shared that he had read the Special Marriage Act before marrying Reena. Although her parents initially refused to talk to him, Aamir said he and his father-in-law became very close, and their relationship continued even after his divorce from Reena.
Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta’s love story is no less than a Bollywood movie. It had love, complications, drama, and emotional acceptance. They had fallen in love with each other in their teenage years when they used to live opposite each other’s house, chatting from their windows. However, when Reena’s parents found out about their love affair, they made her promise that they would never meet him again. This led to tension between the two and the fear of losing each other, who came up with the idea of marrying in secret to keep their relationship safe. However, when the decision came out, a big storm came in his life when Reena’s family broke all ties with him and her father also suffered a heart attack.
Recalling those days, Aamir Khan told that he first read the Special Marriage Act to understand its legal aspects. “I first read the Special Marriage Act to understand whether what Reena and I were going to do was politically correct or not. When I decided to get married, I was not even 21 years old. When I turned 21 in April in 1986, we got legally married on the 18th of the same month.” His friend Satya (Satyamev Jayate producer), his wife Swati and cousin Anand were witnesses to the court marriage.
He further said, “We got married on April 18, two days after I turned 21. We waited for those two days because it was a weekend. We got married and went to our respective homes.” Their hush-hush marriage lasted for some time, when Reena’s sister Anu created such a situation that she had to reveal her marriage with Aamir Khan.
Aamir recalled, “Finally Reena told her sister Anu about our marriage. She was shocked. Her parents did not react well to it. Now that Reena’s parents knew about it, I thought my parents should also know about it. I called her to meet my parents. I gathered all my family members to give this news. My parents thought she was my girlfriend. They were blushing. My father was a dynamite. His temper could explode at any moment. But as soon as I started telling them about our love story, my father got up and hugged me. He said, ‘Reena’s parents are returning in 30 minutes.’ After speaking to Aamir’s family, he decided to meet Reena’s family to convince her parents. Aamir Khan shared, “Reena’s mother refused to let her come home. We don’t want to meet you. It took them four months to calm down. I touched their feet but later they nodded in agreement.
He further added, “I spent some time with them and then they accepted me. They said, ‘I should have met you the same time you came to meet me, I could have said that I can never find a guy like you for Reena.'”
Aamir revealed that his family became so close to him that his sister Farhat married Reena’s brother Rajiv. Aamir Khan added, “Despite our divorce later, Reena’s father was very close to me and would only listen to me. We lost him last year to cancer.”
